Different Politics. Same Agenda.
There are two ways to oppose everything President Trump says or does if you are a career politician in Congress. The first is embraced by the Democrats. If Trump is doing it, it’s wrong. Even when they acknowledge he’s doing the right thing, he’s doing it the wrong way. Rooting waste from the Federal government (In 2025 he shrunk the Federal workforce by 10%, about 300,000 jobs). Closing the borders and deporting illegal aliens. Enacting tax cuts for all American taxpayers. Freeing the Israeli hostages. Extracting massive price reductions from pharmaceutical companies on drugs for the American people. Removing Nicolas Maduro from Venezuela, indicted in New York in 2020 for narco-terrorism but left untouched while he continued to menace. Neutralizing the threat posed by Iran for nearly 50 years. Their obsessive commitment to Trump’s failure always precludes any concern for the welfare of the American people.
David Boies, a very liberal and prominent Democratic attorney, sounded the alarm about how far the intense partisan opposition to Trump has gone in a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled “Partisanship on Iran is Dangerous for America.” Boies represented Al Gore against George W. Bush in 2000 in a failed court battle for the Presidency that came down to how the votes in Florida had been counted. He has a long record of activism, is liberal to the core, and no fan of Donald Trump. Nevertheless, he felt compelled to caution America that intense partisan opposition to Trump on his foreign policy with Iran is dangerous to US national security. He urged Democrats to support the actions because they are effective rather than obstruct them out of their hatred for Trump.
Republicans in Congress take the second, more deceitful route in their opposition to Trump. They’ve earned our contempt as much as the Democrats who openly display their vitriol for Trump. There are very few career Republicans who honestly embrace the revolution in the Government that is at the heart of Trump’s Presidency. Most are trapped between their constituents, who love Trump for delivering on his promises, and the privileged, unproductive lives they enjoy as politicians. They go through the motions of being “with Trump,” while dragging their feet in hopes of outlasting his Presidency and having government dysfunction return to “normal.” They are fully aware their reelection is at risk if they don’t support Trump, and nothing matters more to them than reelection. John Thune, Lindsey Graham, John Cornyn, and Ted Cruz are among the masterful pretenders, and they have plenty of company. The members of our own Wisconsin Republican Delegation manage to create the appearance of supporting Trump, but they are not leaders.
Another Opportunity for Congressional Leadership
The battle to pass the Save America Act into law is just getting started. The need for it is as obvious as neutralizing Iran. Trump has made this Act a priority and he will need the full-throated support of every elected Republican member of Congress to get it across the finish line. It will standardize the fundamental requirements to vote in Federal elections throughout the country to include:
-
Proof of citizenship to register to vote.
-
Photo ID to vote.
-
Voter roll maintenance procedures to remove non-citizens from registered voter lists.
-
In-person verification when registering to vote.
-
State sharing of voter registration information with the Department of Homeland Security to verify citizenship.
There are additional restrictions President Trump wants added to the bill, including limiting mail-in voting to those who have a legitimate need, banning “transgender women” from women’s sports, and banning “gender affirming care” for minors. The impact of these additions will become clear as debate progresses through the House and the Senate.
Public support for voter ID and proof of citizenship is greater than 80%, yet there is strenuous opposition from the Democrats and members of the far-left media to this law. They claim it will result in voter suppression. Americans understand that the Save America Act is a necessary step in the right direction, with only 36 states currently requiring voter ID at the polls. There are more than 50 million non-citizens residing in the United States, both legally and illegally. It is inconceivable that any thinking person could seriously believe that providing proof of citizenship is not essential to the integrity of an election system that permits only citizens to vote.
The Save America Act debate on the floors of Congress will be much less about the merits of the bill, legitimate differences of opinion, and good faith bipartisan efforts to come to a workable agreement, and more about how to play games with the rules of each House. Both Parties will work to outmaneuver one another through procedural calisthenics and tell lies that will underscore their lack of respect for the people they are supposed to represent.
The Democrats and their media allies are already hard at work spreading the big lie that millions of eligible voters will not be able to vote if the Act passes. They claim citizens who do not have their birth certificate, or changed their name through marriage, will be denied their precious right to cast a ballot. Here’s the truth about how things work in Wisconsin, processes that are mirrored in every state in the country. Proof of citizenship is already required to obtain a driver's license. (Non-citizens who are here legally may also be granted a driver’s license with proper documentation). An individual who was born in Wisconsin but cannot locate their birth certificate, may obtain one from the Wisconsin Register of Deeds Office in any county (not just the county of their birth) or from the Wisconsin Vital Records Office. Records from 1907 to the present are readily accessible. For citizens who may not want a driver’s license, but need a voter ID, the Department of Motor Vehicles will issue the ID free of charge with proof of citizenship. For those who changed their name after marriage, legal marriages are all recorded at the local level. The officiant, whether judge, priest, minister or rabbi, is required to file the marriage certificate with the proper county authority. The married couple receives a copy but, if lost, replacement is as seamless as a lost birth certificate. Legal name changes pose no barrier to proof of citizenship.
President Trump’s leadership will bring much needed national attention to the importance of secure elections. The Save America Act is an excellent start, but barely scratches the surface of the work to be done to correct the problems in Wisconsin. There are more than 4 million ineligible voter names maintained on the Wisconsin Registered Voter List, including those who have died, moved, are felons, and have been declared incompetent, in addition to those who may not be citizens. The Wisconsin Elections Commission insists on maintaining this vast reservoir of names that has no defensible purpose. It is available for cybercriminals to manipulate in the creation of fraudulent ballots. There are 250,000 driver’s licenses that the state has issued to non-citizens living in Wisconsin legally. They are indistinguishable from citizen driver’s licenses and can easily be used to vote. Nearly 8,000 non-citizen students from more than 130 countries attend the University of Wisconsin – Madison, and no proof of citizenship is required for a university issued voter ID. This is not a complete list of the problems with the Wisconsin election system, but easily more than enough for those with evil intent to steal an election.
Our freedom depends on elections that accurately reflect the will of the people. Confidence in the integrity of election results is essential for free people to peacefully accept results they are not happy with. Confidence requires election verifiability – the ability to tie every vote cast to the name of a currently eligible voter. The past two years have been a rude awakening for Wisconsin voters as awareness of the unverifiability of our elections spread across the state. Outrage has grown as the Wisconsin Elections Commission and elected legislators steadfastly refuse voter demands to limit the List of Registered Voters to currently eligible voters and clearly mark non-citizen driver’s licenses “not for voting.” Our Congressional Delegation has been absent from this fight, though the weight of their positions and strength of their voices are urgently needed.
The “go to” argument of choice for those who oppose correcting the problems with our election system is “Experts say documented cases of voter fraud are extremely rare.” No credible “expert” would make such a meaningless claim knowing our elections cannot be verified.
Now is the time for each of us to make it clear to the members of the Wisconsin Congressional Delegation that we expect strong, authentic leadership from them. We want to hear their voices loudly and clearly in support of Trump, the Save America Act, and verifiable elections at home. Our resolve is deep and unwavering, and we intend to replace the things that don’t work for us. That includes them.
